What is Electrolysis for the Face?
Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal method. It works by inserting a very fine needle into the hair follicle. A small amount of electrical current is delivered to destroy the hair root. This stops the hair from growing back
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
Hair grows in cycles, and electrolysis only works on hairs that are actively growing. Because of this, you’ll need multiple sessions. Most people need 10 to 20 sessions, spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart, depending on the area, hair type, and your personal hair growth cycle.
How to Prepare Before the Procedure:
• Don’t tweeze or wax the area for at least 2–3 weeks before treatment. Shaving is okay.
• Avoid caffeine on the day of your appointment (it can make you more sensitive).
• Clean skin: Don’t wear makeup or creams on the area.
• If needed, you can take a mild pain reliever (like ibuprofen) before your session.
Aftercare – What to Do After the Procedure:
• Your skin may be red or a little swollen right after treatment – this is normal and should go away in a few hours.
• Don’t touch or pick the treated area.
• Avoid heat and sweating (no hot showers, saunas, or exercise) for 24 hours.
• Keep the area clean and dry.
• Apply soothing creams like aloe vera or a product recommended by your technician.
• Use sun protection – avoid sun exposure for a few days.
Is Electrolysis Safe?
Yes, when performed by a trained professional, it’s very safe and effective. It’s the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal.
Why Do You Need Many Electrolysis Sessions?
Hair doesn’t grow all at once – it grows in cycles. Each hair goes through three main stages:
1. Anagen (active growth) – this is when the hair is attached to the root and electrolysis is most effective.
2. Catagen (transition) – the hair starts to detach from the root.
3. Telogen (resting) – the hair is no longer connected to the root.
Electrolysis only works when the hair is in the anagen phase, because that’s when the root can be destroyed. But at any given time, only a portion of your hairs are in this phase – the others are either resting or transitioning.
That’s why you need multiple sessions, spaced out over time. With each session, we catch more hairs in the right stage. Over time, this leads to permanent hair removal, but it requires patience and consistency.
